Happy Fourth of July, Independence Day in the US.
Did you know Independence Day commemorates the passage of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776? Yes, it’s not about achieving independence, it’s about the decision to pursue it, to pursue change. The Revolutionary War actually began the year before and didn’t end until 1783.
Though the U.S. Congress made it an unpaid holiday for federal employees in 1870, Independence Day did not become a paid federal holiday until 1941. It is generally celebrated with food and fireworks and gatherings. But the important thing we should remember is that it celebrates the pursuit of change, of freedom from tyranny and oppression. It is perhaps a day to consider how we can enact more change to counteract enduring oppressions.
Happy July 4th. Stay safe.
