Stitched Saturday – May

We posted some great stories for the April post – check them out – but time flies like an arrow (and fruit flies like a banana), which takes us onto our next submission prompt.

If you’re not familiar with Stitched Saturday, we give you something for inspiration and you knock up a story or a poem. All your submissions will be collected together and posted up for the Stitched Smile blog post on the last Saturday in June. No more than 1,500 words for each story or poem, and post them as comments to this blog post.

The very best of your stories will be compiled together for our October “Best of Stitched Smile” collection, and those chosen for publication will get $10 and an e-copy of the book upon release.

This month will be a little different – I don’t want you to be inspired by a picture, but by a theme.

I’ll explain  – I’ve just spent a week in Croatia. It’s a beautiful country, and an experience I’d thoroughly recommend, but there was something of particular interest to the horror writer in me.

We stayed in the lovely coastal area of Cavtat, a bay of crystal clear waters. We took the occasional boat trip out to Dubrovnik (which doubles as Kings Landing in Game of Thrones, fantasy fans).

We kept sailing past a huge abandoned building complex, and I was intrigued.

Turns out, after a bit of research, it was a five star hotel complex – the Belvedere – built in 1985, but abandoned in 1991 during the Siege of Dubrovnik. Since then, it’s remained completely empty. It’s a long-dead testament to an all-too recent war, and the photographs from the place are eerie as hell.

So, your theme, inspired by the hotel Belvedere, is DEAD BUILDINGS. Give me your tales of abandoned complexes, of haunted places left to ruin.

You have until the 30th of June to get your stories sent in – as I said up there, simply submit them as a comment on this post. I can’t wait to read them!
