The Reaper
The Reaper comes to claim a soul;
A death to usher in
A scythe of doom to rake the coal;
A breath to render thin
The moment of arrival bleeds;
Enacts the final mark
And all must heed the plot that speeds
A flame into the dark
Horrific in the night’s attire;
Horrendous skeleton
Enrapturing the bleak desire;
The dead’s own telamon
The Reaper knows no bribe or taunt;
A silent killer’s drape
And when the grim one comes to haunt
No mortal can escape …
James Matthew Byers resides in Wellington, Alabama with his wife, kids, a dog named after an elf, and two tortoises. He has been published in poetry journals and through Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, AL, where he received his Master’s in 2010.
